To slow the spread of the new coronavirus (COVID-19), many schools have closed unexpectedly. To ensure that children who rely on free or reduced-price meals at school are able to get the nutrition they need, USDA is working with states to continue providing meals to students.  Usually, the rules require that children gather and eat their meals on site.

As schools closed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was critical that school districts provide meals to all students and particularly to students who rely on the two meals a day provided in school when school is open.

2020 Summer Food Service Program Sponsor Renewal

For all sponsors that operated the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) in 2019, the SFSP Renewal on the Child Nutrition Management System (CNMS) is now active for the 2020 summer. It is expected that all experienced sponsors will access and submit the renewal on-line and send any additional required information via email.

SFSP Information and New Sponsor Application Request Form

The Food and Nutrition Service, an agency of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), administers the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) at the federal level, while the New York State Education Department (NYSED) administers the program at the state level. Locally, it is operated by sponsors who apply for and are approved to operate the program. An overview of the program is provided in the Summer Food Service Program Summary Sheet.

Child Nutrition Program New York State Waiver Requests

The New York State Education Department (SED) has requested a waiver from USDA for all SFAs participating in the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program from the requirements in Section 19b of the National School Lunch Act [42 U.S. C. 1769a] requiring schools participating in the program to make free fresh fruits and vegetables available “to students” throughout the school day. This will allow parents/guardians to pick up the fresh fruit and vegetables on behalf of their children at non-congregate meal distribution locations.

Additionally, program information may be made available in languages other than English.

To file a program discrimination complaint, complete the USDA Program Discrimination Complaint Form, AD-3027, found online at How to File a Program Discrimination Complaint and at any USDA office or write a letter addressed to USDA and provide in the letter all of the information requested in the form.
